How to Keep Your Pet Cool in Summer (Without AC)

Summer heat is dangerous for pets — dogs and cats can overheat in minutes. But you don't need air conditioning to keep them safe and comfortable.

The Best Ways to Keep Pets Cool in Summer

  • Cooling mats — Self-cooling mats that activate on contact require no electricity or freezing. Your pet's body weight triggers the cooling effect, which lasts for hours and recharges on its own.
  • Adjust walk times — Walk dogs in the early morning (before 9am) or after sunset when pavement has cooled. Hot pavement burns paw pads: if you can't hold your hand on it for 5 seconds, it's too hot for your dog.
  • Portable water — Always carry a travel water bottle with a built-in drinking bowl. Dogs dehydrate quickly in heat and may refuse to drink from unfamiliar sources.
  • Shade and ventilation — Provide a shaded outdoor space and ensure indoor areas have airflow. Fans help dogs cool through panting more effectively.
  • Frozen treats — Freeze wet food or yogurt in a lick pad for a cooling enrichment activity that keeps them engaged and hydrated.

Warning Signs of Heat Stress

Watch for heavy panting, excessive drooling, lethargy, glazed eyes, or vomiting. These are early signs of heat exhaustion. Move your pet to a cool area, offer water, and apply cool (not cold) wet towels to their neck, armpits, and groin. Contact your vet immediately if symptoms persist.
